Wrapping the Walls in Carolina Blue
Founded in 1789, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was the first state university in the United States. Commonly known simply as “Carolina”, UNC has a long history of superior academics and athletics.
Fast forward almost 200 years to 1965 when Carmichael Arena opened to host the men’s basketball and wrestling teams. The arena is named for William D. Carmichael Jr. In addition to his membership on UNC’s basketball team, the 1921 graduate served the university in many capacities following a successful career in advertising. Most notably, Carmichael played a lead fundraising role for the expanded medical school, new teaching hospital and public broadcasting system in the 1940s.
Today, students and fans visit Carmichael Arena to cheer on the school’s volleyball, gymnastics, wrestling and women’s basketball teams. In 2010, the arena underwent a two year, $30 million complete renovation. Although the infrastructure changes and additions including a new wing for offices, a new suite for women’s basketball, a new jumbo video scoreboard, new acoustics, lighting, sound system and spacious entry were impressive, the 6,822-seat arena’s hallways and other spaces still needed updating to keep pace with the other improvements.
Working with women’s basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell, ImageMark proposed a project that would include inspiring visuals to emphasize the accomplishments of UNC’s athletic programs and evoke team spirit and motivation for athletes and visitors alike. More than 4,500 square feet of cinder block space was transformed from mundane walls into exciting story boards highlighting the great attributes and accomplishments of UNC athletics.
As always, ImageMark’s team worked extensively with the client to determine exactly what they were looking for, educate them on the possibilities and to finalize the design and process prior to execution.
The multi-phase project will give Carmichael Arena’s interior an amazing look through and through while telling the story of the University’s impressive athletic and academic history.
ImageMark’s wall wrap products are cost effective, durable and appropriate for indoor and outdoor applications. The wraps can be created in a variety of sizes for use in schools, hospitals, gyms and more.
